So, you want to be a Joiner ?
Here’s what you need.

What do Joiners do?
- Manufacture, assemble and fit components for door and window frames, doors and sashes, and for stairs.
- Manufacture, assemble and install joinery unit components.
- Prepare surfaces and apply paint and other finishes for joinery.
- Cut and install glass for joinery.
- Use aluminium, including fabricate, assemble, construct framework and manufacture aluminium grills and louvres.
- work out job requirements from drawings, templates and written instructions
- set up jigs, select timber, and cut to size and shape using templates
- cut joints using wood-cutting machines or hand-powered tools
- assemble prepared wood to form structures and fittings
- work with plastic laminates, perspex or metals
- maintain and sharpen tools.
How do a become a Joiner?
Firstly, you will need to do some work experience so that you know what the job is about. If you think it’s for you, find an employer that is looking for an apprentice Joiner. You will then become an apprentice Joiner and will you will complete a certificate III in Off Site Construction (Joinery-Timber/Aluminium/Glass) at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Once you have completed the four year apprenticeship, you will be a qualified tradie!
What Next?
Once you are a tradie in the construction industry, you can continue working for small or large companies and move into leading hand, supervising or management positions. You might even want to start your own business and employ apprentices yourself. Some tradies even go on to further education to complete courses from Certificate IV to bachelor level. There are plenty of options for qualified Joiner.
