So, you want to be a Floor Finisher (hard sector)?

Here’s what you need.

  • An eye for detail
  • Logical thinker
  • Good hand skills
  • Ability to work in teams or unsupervised

What do Floor Finishes do?

  • Prepare, sand, and apply coatings to, timber floors. 
  • Install and repair cork flooring including prepare, sand, and apply coating systems. 
  • Install and repair mosaic and block parquetry flooring including prepare, sand, and apply coating systems. 
  • Install pre-finished manufactured and engineered timber flooring. 
  • Install and repair non-structural strip timber flooring including prepare, sand, and apply coating systems. 
  • Prepare, apply and finish epoxy and seamless floor coverings. 

How do a become a Floor Finisher?

Firstly, you will need to do some work experience so that you know what the job is about. If you think it’s for you, find an employer that is looking for an apprentice floor finisher. You will then become an apprentice floor finisher and will you will complete a certificate III in floor covering and finishing at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Floor finishers can also get a trade contractors licence by completing an apprenticeship in carpentry.
Once you have completed the four year apprenticeship, you will be a qualified tradie!

What Next?

Once you are a tradie in the construction industry, you can continue working for small or large companies and move into leading hand, supervising or management positions. You might even want to start your own business and employ apprentices yourself. Some tradies even go on to further education to complete courses from Certificate IV to bachelor level. There are plenty of options for qualified floor finisher.
