What do construction estimators do?

Construction estimators work closely with builders and suppliers to ensure that construction costs are known and are monitored from the planning stages right through to handover. Construction estimators are required to provide information to the builder so that negations can be made with the client on the cost of a building project. The job of a construction estimator is therefore extremely important and they are currently in high demand.

How do I become a building designer?

Firstly, you will need to do some work experience so that you know what the job is about. If you think it’s for you, you can find an employer that is looking for a cadet construction estimator. Alternatively, you can go directly into training at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as TAFE and begin courses from certificate IV level right up to Advanced Diploma. Lots of construction estimators start out as tradies and then use their knowledge and experience to gain further qualification and become a construction estimator.

What Next?

Once you are a construction estimator, you can work for small or large companies and move into supervising or management positions. You might even want to start your own business and consult to clients. A qualified construction estimator is very employable and you may even be able to use your qualifications to work overseas.
