So you want to be a sparky? Can you:

  • Perform mathematical equations to a fairly high standard, usually maths A is the minimum
  • Apply yr 12 physics to solve problems related to the electro technology trades
  • Work in teams or on your own
  • Work at heights
  • Be physically fit so that you can get the tough jobs done like pulling big cables through underground conduits

What do electricians do?

Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical wiring systems and electric heating and lighting in houses, factories, shops, substations and other premises.

They may perform the following tasks:

  • read wiring diagrams to plan layout of wiring systems, eg. switchboards, power outlets, lights and switches;
  • install insulated cables and connect supplies, outlets and other fittings using hand or power tools;
  • connect ends of installed cables to circuit breakers, transformers, motors, heaters and other electrical equipment to complete circuits;
  • test circuits and appliances;
  • connect system to power supply; and
  • install electrical equipment such as storage heaters, water heaters, electric signs, switchboards, motors and other electrical equipment.

After satisfactorily completing an appropriate business course and/or examination, electricians may specialise as electrical contractors who order materials, organise staff to meet customer needs and carry out other tasks associated with running a business. Electricians need to work neatly as it is usually expected that the wiring circuits will not be visible.

How do I become an electrician?

Firstly, you will need to do some work experience so that you know what the job is about. If you think it’s for you, find an employer that is looking for an apprentice electrician. You will then become an apprentice and will you will complete a certificate III in electro-technology at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in addition to your on the job training.

Once you have completed the four year apprenticeship, you will be a qualified tradie!

What Next?

Once you are a tradie in the construction industry, you can continue working for small or large companies and move into leading hand, supervising or management positions. You might even want to start your own business and employ apprentices yourself. Some tradies even go on to further education to complete courses from Certificate IV to bachelor level. There are plenty of options for qualified Sparky’s.
